Short of a little volunteering at a food bank a couple of years ago, I haven’t been all that good at giving back in my community. Like many, I can pretty quickly become wrapped up in my own shit without keeping a bigger picture in mind.

One of my fellow Flickreenos, the marvelous Myles. D. Grant recently gave up a week of his vacation to ride in the AIDS/Lifecycle. While I was happy to contribute to his fundraising, it made me realize that 2008 was a year that I needed to get off my derriere and do something of my own.

I’m going to run/walk a half marathon in October as part of Team in Training. My participation includes raising funds for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma research and patient services. I need to raise a minimum of $2,100, but I’d like to raise more — $5,000! It’s not going to be easy. It’s difficult times all over, but I do feel that it’s important to spread a little love to those who are having a more difficult journey through life.

I hope that you’ll consider sponsoring me. If you donate over $100, I’ll send you an original Polaroid diptych from my collection as a thank you for your generous contribution.

I’ll be sharing weekly updates about how my training and the fundraising are going.

Hey Heather!

Coincidentally I just started getting back into shape after living on my couch for the past four years, and I was thinking how it might be cool to run a marathon in a couple of years or so. This post was the ultimate trigger that made me think of running that marathon AND helping people! I’ll be looking for places where I can do that myself.

Thanks, and good luck!

Good luck! My husband used to coach for Team ‘n Training and it’s a wonderful program. I’ve been to many events and it is so inspiring to see so many different people all coming together to support a very worthy cause. The best of luck to you in your training! I’m looking forward to reading about your experience.

just donated, what a great cause. My nephew has leukemia, and is a survivor.

Good luck! I’ve run many marathons & half marathons, and I can attest that they are both fun & addictive.

good for you — it’s a good goal to have and is for a worthy cause. i have several friends who have trained with TNT and i’ve never heard anything but good things about the program and organization. i’m training right now to run the SF Marathon on Aug 3rd. i’ve run a lot of half’s before but this will be my first full marathon. and when that’s over, i’m planning on running the Las Vegas half marathon this December for fun, in an Elvis suit… :)

the best of luck to you!

I’ll donate as soon as I get a little extra money. Until then I’ll spread the word.

Good luck and happy running!
