Every winter, my brother-in-law, Owen and his neighbour Steve build an small ice rink that spans their two front yards. This year, the rink is 46′ long and with new boards, beautiful to behold.
Every child that I spied zipping around the ice wore a helmet, whether they were playing hockey or not. My nephew has different helmets for hockey, down hill skiing and biking.
I don’t think I had a helmet for any of those activities when I was young. You know, back in the dark ages.

Funny that the year I decided to take on a Polaroid a day project, is the year that the company announces that they’re going to cease production of their instant film — boo!
Well, I took my 366th photograph in -20° celsius temperature last week while visiting my sister and her family in Ottawa for New Years. It was a far cry from the pleasant weather and the Air Stream that ushered in 2008.
November in California is a little different to those of my youth in Ottawa. Olympus XA
If you missed the first installment, you might want to give this a read. It’s totally optional as each emwr is a little individual nugget (quite like healthy dog poop). What I’m doing while you’re still asleep, typically between the hours of 6:00 and 6:30 in the morning:
(Not so early) Our dogs are ageist. They hates the puppies.
When you wake up late (say 7:30), it’s light outside and you don’t have to struggle for the tootsie roll. Otherwise, uneventful.
(Now with more light, go “fall back”) Bug was not impressed with the red heeler we met. Should have been given it was him, but bigger.
Well, it’s lighter outside though the fog is rolling in like some John Carpenter movie. The fog! The fooog! The foooooooooogggggggg!
Bug wanted to hang out with Seamus (King Charles Cavalier Spaniel of Google Girl) but it wasn’t to be. Otherwise, good!
Like yesterday, dark and uneventful. This may be the rinse and repeat for the next four months.
After a week of shit weather (grey) today looks quite promising. Poop score 2 for 2.
[INTERMISSION -- a few days in Hawaii]
All quiet on the Cole Valley front. I however feel like a zombie. Hello jet lag my old friend….
Damp sidewalk and dry sidewalk leads to tiny wet footprints
Keen to see “The Mist” but thinking not such a good idea given how many early morning walks are fog-bound (like today). Stupid fog.
To whomever rained popcorn down in the dog park — “you suck!”
Chieka to Lacey (perceived nemesis, 100+ lbs. Rottweiler) “woof woof woof” = “fuck you…… fuck you….. fuuuuuuuuuuuck you!”
No fog! Prepare for a glorious day. 2 for 2 on the poop.
Pups were far too scroungy this morning. Like it rained chips or treats. Short leashed.
In the world according to Chieka (WATC), newspaper delivery men who sling papers from moving cars are minions of the Dark Lord.
Quiet in Cole Valley. Tryptophan continues to weave a charm around Casa Chawazek.
Bug confused by “instant forest” on cole st and why he’s not allowed to pee there. Brief conversation about Christmas trees ensues.
Bug (art critic extraordinaire) pees on discarded Van Gogh Sunflowers.
Further conversations about the sanctity of xmas trees (and then back to bed — I feel like poop!)
How we greet big dogs: “growl grrrrr growl.” How we greet little dogs: “sniff sniff sniff.” my dogs are sizists.
